Free to explore · Purchases optional
Start with Charlotte Amalie, not an expensive excursion
The historic district, shopping streets and waterfront give a port day a simple focus. Browsing public areas is free to explore; getting downtown from your particular terminal may cost money. Decide on that first rather than assuming every ship docks beside Main Street.
Main Street & the historic district
Walk the downtown streets and look into the shop-lined lanes at your own pace. An exterior sightseeing walk does not include admission to museums, attractions or private buildings.
Vendors Plaza & the waterfront
Browse the market near Emancipation Garden, then leave time for the harbourfront. A souvenir is optional; keep space in the day simply to enjoy the town.
99 Steps
This historic step street is a free-to-explore stop in Charlotte Amalie. Expect stairs and an uphill walk. It is not a promise of access to nearby private attractions, and you can skip the climb without missing the downtown atmosphere.

Browse first · Buy deliberately
Shopping is part of the St. Thomas experience
Downtown Main Street is known for jewelry, watches and fragrances alongside other shops. You can make shopping the main event or just enjoy browsing between sightseeing stops. Duty-free branding is not a guarantee that an item is cheaper than at home.
Charlotte Amalie / Main Street
Compare jewelry, gold, watches, perfumes and souvenirs without feeling obliged to buy. For a significant purchase, ask for an itemized receipt, product details and written return or warranty terms.
Havensight Mall
The mall beside the West Indian Company cruise dock offers another shopping option. If your ship uses Havensight, consider browsing there before committing to a separate downtown outing.
Crown Bay Center
This shopping and dining complex serves the Crown Bay terminal area. It is a different starting point from Havensight; check your own docking location before planning a shopping route.

What does duty-free mean for your purchases?
Your customs allowance depends on where you are returning, your itinerary and the applicable rules. Do not assume a shop’s duty-free label gives you an unlimited allowance. Keep receipts and check declaration requirements; travelers returning outside the United States should consult their own customs authority.

Views without a large attraction bill
A scenic stop still needs a transport plan
Drake’s Seat
The overlook takes in Magens Bay and the surrounding island scenery. Treat it as a brief viewpoint stop, not a beach-access point. Confirm the stop and any charge as part of your driver’s agreed itinerary.
Mountain Top
Visit USVI identifies the viewpoint’s views as free of charge. Transportation, drinks and shopping are separate costs. Check current visitor access before arranging a ride specifically for this stop.
One route, fewer separate rides
If you want a viewpoint and a beach, compare a combined transport quote with separate journeys. Ask what stops, waiting time and return travel are included rather than assuming a tour price covers every extra.

Beach access and a beach day are different budgets

Magens Bay: budget for admission
The Magens Bay Authority currently lists $7 daily admission per nonresident, with children under 12 free, and a separate $2 parking charge. These are the authority’s published rates reviewed October 16, 2026; confirm them before traveling.
Transportation, food and any equipment or seating rental are additional. A photograph of a quiet bay does not guarantee calm water or suitable swimming conditions on your day.
Sapphire Beach
An east-end beach option near Red Hook. Compare the return journey from your cruise terminal, then confirm the access point and any parking, seating or equipment charges separately.
Brewers Bay
Near the University of the Virgin Islands and the airport, this is another beach to consider. Check current access arrangements and transport rather than assuming every terminal is within an easy walk.
Coki Point, Secret Harbour & Hull Bay
These are additional choices in the official island beach guide. Choose one that fits your route; beach access does not automatically include a resort’s pools, chairs or other private facilities.
Current admission or parking charges for these alternatives were not independently established for this guide. Ask about access and extras before booking transport. Check weather, water conditions and local instructions before entering the sea; no beach is presented here as a swimming-safety guarantee.

Choose one paid experience that fits your port day
A beach day with return transport
Compare a taxi plan with a cruise-line excursion. Confirm admission, seating, food, pickup location and the return journey rather than assuming a beach transfer is an all-inclusive day pass.
An island tour
Ask for the actual stops and total party price. Shopping time, a scenic overlook and beach time compete for the same hours ashore; a shorter route may be more useful than a long checklist.
Snorkeling or a boat outing
Guided water outings are another paid option. Confirm the current operator, departure point, equipment, experience requirements, weather policy and ship-return arrangements before booking.
These USD tiers are planning ceilings for your party, not ticket prices or guaranteed packages. Add transportation, admission, meals and extras before choosing.
Under $100 · Keep browsing free; choose one extra
Start with a free-to-explore downtown walk or browse near your terminal. Price a meal, a beach entry or transport before adding it. Several taxi journeys or a larger party can use this budget quickly.
Under $500 · Compare a beach day or island outing
Get the complete party price for return transportation, beach admission and any seating or equipment. Compare that with a guided island outing; neither is automatically included in this ceiling.
Under $1,000 · A larger group or a day on the water
Compare a guided snorkeling or boat outing for your group, including transfers, equipment, taxes and cancellation terms. Check that the actual meeting and return times fit your port call.
$1,000+ · A planned splurge, not a requirement
A private charter or customized excursion needs an individual quote and a realistic ship-return plan. Spending more is optional: you can enjoy shopping streets and waterfront atmosphere without an expensive excursion.
Before you go ashore
Know your terminal and your return plan
Havensight / WICO
The West Indian Company Dock at Havensight is one of St. Thomas’ main cruise docking locations. Havensight Mall is beside this dock; downtown Charlotte Amalie is a separate part of your plan.
Crown Bay
The Austin “Babe” Monsanto Marine Terminal at Crown Bay is west of Charlotte Amalie. Crown Bay Center and terminal taxi services are there; do not use a Havensight walking plan for this arrival.
Confirm your actual arrival
Your cruise line’s instructions take priority over assumptions based on the ship or a previous visit. Docking or anchorage arrangements can vary. Confirm the passenger exit and how to get back to your ship.

- Agree on transportation before leaving. Confirm currency, whether a quote is per person or per vehicle, the number of passengers, any waiting or stop charges and return pickup. No fixed taxi fare or travel time is promised here.
- Keep the all-aboard time with you. Allow a return buffer and confirm whether your ship follows local time. The ride and the walk through the terminal both count.
- Choose a walk that suits you. Heat, hills, stairs and crossings can change the day. Carry water and sun protection, wear suitable shoes and do not assume every historic route is step-free.
- Keep purchases and excursions optional. A browsing day does not require a major purchase. Confirm inclusions and cancellation terms before paying for any activity.
