A port day without an excursion
Costa Maya’s cruise-port complex can be the outing. Start with a walk through the visitor area, browse the shops and enjoy the waterfront atmosphere before deciding whether to spend more.
Browse first, buy only if you want to
Looking around the port shops does not need to become a shopping trip. Notice the colorful details, take photographs where permitted and leave room to stop rather than rushing from one paid activity to another.
“Free to explore” describes walking and browsing, not an all-inclusive day. Food, drinks, purchases and separately operated experiences can add to the cost. Follow the port’s current visitor instructions and stay in permitted areas.

Food, a slower pace & the pool-area question

Keep lunch close to the ship
The port complex has dining as well as shops. Compare menus and the full bill before ordering, including the currency, any service charges and what is included. A meal can be the main paid addition to an otherwise simple walk.
Check before planning around a pool
Our photographs show a pool beside the waterfront on a past visit. They do not establish today’s access rules, opening status or price.
Before settling in, ask port staff or the business managing the area whether pool use, seating, loungers or a day pass require payment, a purchase or a reservation. We have not verified a current official pool-access policy, so this guide does not promise complimentary use or advertise a day pass.

Set a ceiling, then compare the whole day
A port walk is the free starting point. A meal, a beach outing or an excursion is an optional addition—not a requirement for enjoying Costa Maya.
These familiar EBB tiers are planning ceilings in USD, not current price quotes or guaranteed offers. Check the final total for your party, including transport, admission, food and fees.
Under $100 · Keep the extras small
Start with the port walk, then compare a meal, drinks or a purchase with your remaining allowance. If adding a ride outside the port, get a total round-trip quote before deciding.

A beach break or archaeological excursion is a different plan from browsing the port. Check the actual party total, transfers, admission and return time before booking.

For a larger party or private arrangement, ask what the quote covers and whether admission, food, equipment or extra passengers cost more. A larger ceiling is not a reason to fill every hour.

Do not assume a short port call needs a premium package. If considering a bespoke outing, verify the operator, written inclusions, cancellation terms and return arrangements before paying.

Choose one outing beyond the port
Mahahual’s beach area and inland attractions are separate destinations. Plan transportation or an excursion rather than treating them as part of the immediate port complex.
Mahahual & a beach break
Mahahual is a short drive from the port. Compare an arranged beach outing with an independent round-trip ride. Confirm the pickup point and return plan before leaving.
Ask a beach business about its current access terms, seating, minimum spend and facilities. A transfer or beach-club package is not the same thing as a free waterfront walk; neither the photo nor the name “beach break” guarantees swimming conditions.
Chacchoben archaeological site
This is an inland excursion, not a walk from the pier. Check INAH’s visitor information and choose transport that leaves enough time to return to the ship.
Confirm admission, guide services and transfers in the actual quote. Official listings differ on opening hours, so verify the day’s access directly rather than relying on a fixed schedule here.
A cruise-line excursion
Start with the outings offered for your own sailing. The cruise line’s current selection helps you compare the destination, transport, meeting point and participation requirements.
Check cancellation terms, weather arrangements and what the price excludes. We have not personally tried the outings described here; availability and prices need a sailing-specific check.
Before you leave the ship
Keep the return journey simple
- Use the ship’s instructions. Confirm arrival, all-aboard time and which clock to follow. Port times and calls can change.
- Allow time in both directions. Include the walk along the pier, meeting points, transport and possible delays. Choose a return buffer appropriate to your itinerary.
- Agree on transport before leaving. Confirm the destination, total fare, currency, passenger count and return pickup. No fixed taxi fare or transfer time is promised here.
- Check current conditions. Heat, rain, wind and sea conditions can affect a day ashore. Follow the ship, port and activity provider’s instructions.
