Explore Roatánby Budget
Plan an easy port beach day, an independent visit to West Bay, or a larger island outing—starting with the port where your ship docks.
Plan your cruise day
Choose your kind of cruise day
Start with free things to do in Roatán for cruise visitors, then allow for taxi fares, food or equipment. These three starting points help you decide where to spend your time and what to allow for.
A Mahogany Bay beach day
If your ship uses this port, walking to the beach and enjoying the port grounds keeps the plan simple. The chairlift and beach upgrades are optional.
Plan an easy port day →Make time for West Bay
Arrange a ride, agree on the return pickup and enjoy the beach. Transportation is the main extra cost to plan before you set off.
Plan your West Bay visit →Port first, island next
Take a look around the waterfront port area, then use it as a starting point for a beach or sightseeing outing that fits your ship’s schedule.
Know your starting point →Know which Roatán port you are using
Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole are separate facilities. Check your cruise itinerary before arranging a pickup; “Roatán cruise port” alone is not a precise meeting point.
Get your bearings
Western Roatán · North is upMahogany Bay / Isla Tropicale
The Mahogany Bay facility is currently branded Isla Tropicale. It offers a beach, a nature trail, shops, food and the optional Magical Flying Chair. The port operator limits access to cruise passengers.
Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole
This is a different waterfront port, with shopping and transportation for island outings. A West Bay taxi plan should begin with this port’s pickup arrangements, not directions to Mahogany Bay.
Do not choose your port based only on a cruise-line name or a photograph of a ship. Use the actual itinerary and the instructions provided onboard.

Mahogany Bay: beach time without an island transfer
For visitors docking here, the beach and landscaped port area can be the day’s main event. You do not need to build a complicated excursion around every port call.

Walk to the beach
The nature trail is the walking alternative to the chairlift. Start with the port’s directions and follow the marked route. Walking keeps a chairlift ticket out of your budget; check current access instructions when you arrive.
Choose your optional extras
The scenic chairlift offers a different view of the lagoon and beach. Confirm the current ticket price and restrictions before buying. Food, drinks, cabanas and rentals can add to the total; do not assume every seat or beach amenity is included.

West Bay: make the journey part of the plan
West Bay’s clear water is a memorable reason to leave the port. Plan the transfer first, then decide whether you want a simple beach visit or paid facilities and equipment.

Allow time in both directions
Use approximately 30–45 minutes each way as a planning allowance from the cruise ports. Coxen Hole is closer; Mahogany Bay takes longer. Traffic and road conditions can extend either journey, so confirm the day’s estimate with your driver.
- Agree on the fare before leaving: per person or per vehicle, one way or round trip?
- Confirm the meeting place, return pickup and how you will contact the driver.
- Work backward from all-aboard time, with extra room for delays and entering the port.
Free beach access is not a free resort day
You can visit the public beach without buying a resort day pass. Chairs, private facilities, equipment, food and transport are separate. Ask your driver about the access point and check what a day pass actually includes before paying.
Reef outings are available in this area, but clear water in a photograph does not establish safe conditions. Check the weather and local advice, stay within your ability and choose a qualified guide if you need support.

More free or low-cost ideas
Choose one or two stops that fit your route. A longer checklist can mean more transfer time and less time enjoying the island.
Walk West End & Half Moon Bay
A village and waterfront alternative to a full beach-facility day. Look around West End, browse without an obligation to buy and enjoy the view of neighboring Half Moon Bay. Allow for transportation and any food or purchases.
Carambola Chocolate Factory
The Dixon Cove factory currently advertises free entry and complimentary samples, with no reservation needed for a simple visit. Workshops and other experiences are paid separately. Check opening information before arranging your ride.
West End–West Bay water taxi
A possible connection between two different beach areas, rather than a transfer from the cruise port. Confirm the fare, pickup point, weather-dependent service and return plan locally. Keep a road-transfer backup if your cruise schedule is tight.

A viewpoint on your taxi outing
The sign in our photograph identifies the Charankako / Wild Roatán viewpoint area. A local tour provider also identifies this scenic stop. Ask whether a stop fits your driver’s route and your available time, and confirm any current access fee.
Keep a viewpoint stop short enough to leave plenty of time for your main outing. Transportation and any access charge belong in the day’s budget.
Practical cruise-day tips
Ship time comes first
Honduras uses Central Standard Time without daylight-saving changes. Your ship may use a different clock. Follow the ship’s stated time and all-aboard deadline, rather than relying on an automatically updated phone.
Small bills, clear agreements
The port FAQ says U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Carry small bills, confirm the currency and payment method, and check what is included before paying for transport or facilities. Card acceptance varies.
Keep a generous return buffer
Arrange your return before heading out. Leave time beyond the expected drive for traffic, a late pickup and getting through the port. If the schedule feels tight, simplify the outing rather than count on a quick trip.
Use local advice, not a blanket safety promise
Review the current Honduras advisory, stay aware of your surroundings and use established transportation. We do not recommend walking isolated stretches between West Bay and West End alone.
Read the current U.S. travel advisory ↗Water and weather can change the plan
Assess conditions before swimming or snorkeling, watch boat traffic and avoid standing on or touching coral. Bringing your own gear does not remove the need to check conditions, access rules and your abilities. Choose a land-based day if the water is unsuitable.
Transport, access, operating details and prices can change. Verify with the port, cruise line or operator before your visit. Research checked October 13, 2026; personal photos show earlier visits.

Roatán cruise-day FAQ
Can you walk to the beach from Mahogany Bay?
Yes. The port operator lists a nature trail as an alternative to the chairlift. The facility is for cruise passengers using that port; do not assume that docking at Coxen Hole gives you the same access.
Supporting visitor information ↗Is the Mahogany Bay chairlift free?
Treat the scenic chairlift as an optional paid activity. A current price is not published in the port FAQ we checked. Confirm the fare and any ride restrictions with your cruise line or the port before buying.
Supporting visitor information ↗Which cruise port is closest to West Bay?
Coxen Hole is closer to West Bay than Mahogany Bay. Allow roughly 30–45 minutes each way as a planning starting point, then confirm with your driver. Traffic, the exact pickup point and road conditions can make the journey longer.
Supporting visitor information ↗Is West Bay Beach free?
The public beach can be enjoyed without a resort day pass. Transportation, private facilities, chairs, equipment, food and drinks are separate costs. Confirm where you will enter and which facilities your chosen access point includes.
Supporting visitor information ↗How much time should cruise passengers allow to return to the ship?
Work backward from your ship’s all-aboard time, allowing for the drive, traffic delays and getting through the port. Agree on an earlier pickup with your driver and keep a generous additional buffer. A normal drive-time estimate is not a return guarantee.
Supporting visitor information ↗Are Mahogany Bay and the Port of Roatán the same place?
No. Mahogany Bay, currently branded Isla Tropicale, and the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole are separate cruise facilities. Check the port listed on your itinerary before booking transportation.
