Let Old Town be the outing
Walking and browsing can be the main event in Key West. Choose a manageable part of town rather than trying to cover every landmark between arrival and all-aboard time.
Mallory Square, Duval Street & the waterfront
Look around the waterfront at Mallory Square, browse along Duval Street and take time for Old Town’s historic streets and shopfronts. Public areas are the free starting point; meals, purchases, museum entry and organized activities are separate costs.
Do not assume your cruise stays for sunset. Enjoy the waterfront during your actual time ashore and plan the return to your assigned pier.

A beach stop, if it fits
Public beach access or a paid state park
Smathers Beach
This public beach is on South Roosevelt Boulevard, away from the Old Town waterfront. Treat it as a separate outing rather than an automatic stop on a short downtown stroll.
Public beach access is different from a fully free beach day: the City lists paid parking, and transport, equipment rentals and food can add costs. Check current access and facilities before setting out.
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park
Combine the historic fort with the park’s beach area. Park admission applies, including for visitors arriving on foot or by bicycle; rental equipment and other purchases are extra.
Use the park’s current visitor information for admission, opening and access notices. Confirm the route and remaining time before walking over.
Choose for today’s conditions
A photograph is not a water-condition report. Weather, seaweed and sea conditions can change a beach visit. Check local instructions and make swimming or water-activity decisions for the conditions you find.
For a short cruise call, a waterfront walk may fit better than adding another journey.
Explore by Budget
Add one attraction or organized outing
A walk gives you a useful free foundation. Compare one admission or tour with the time and money you want to spend, rather than stacking tickets just because the sights are close together.
Shipwreck Treasure Museum
A paid look at Key West’s wrecking history near Mallory Square. Check the official museum ticket options and visit information before buying a single ticket or a combination package.
Key West Lighthouse
The Lighthouse & Keeper’s Quarters Museum is a paid historic stop on Whitehead Street. The tower involves stairs; check visitor requirements and admission with the Key West Art & Historical Society.
Hemingway Home & Museum
Another paid Whitehead Street option, with a guided tour included in general admission. Check the museum’s current gate-ticket policy, hours and payment details directly.
A trolley tour
Old Town Trolley offers a paid sightseeing alternative to covering town entirely on foot. Compare the current route, boarding locations and last departures. A sightseeing ticket is separate from any transport arranged by your ship.
Snorkeling, fishing & boat excursions
Water outings require more of the port day. Verify the departure point, check-in time, duration, participation requirements and weather/cancellation terms with the operator. Confirm any fishing-license arrangements before booking.
These USD tiers are planning ceilings, not ticket prices or guaranteed offers. Add admission for your party, transport, food and fees to compare the whole day.
Under $100 · A walk, a meal or one admission
Start with Old Town browsing and compare a meal or a museum visit with your remaining allowance. Add transportation and the whole party’s admission before deciding what fits.
Under $500 · Compare one organized outing
A trolley tour or boat outing can replace part of your walking day. Check the actual party total, meeting point, duration and return arrangements before booking.
Under $1,000 · Check the group total
For a larger group or private arrangement, get a written quote covering passenger numbers, admission, equipment and transportation. More spending does not create more time in port.
$1,000+ · Only where the experience warrants it
A private charter is optional, not a requirement for enjoying Key West. Verify the operator, inclusions, cancellation terms and a return plan that works for your sailing.
Leave time to stop
A meal and a little browsing
Duval Street and Old Town let you combine a walk with restaurant menus, cafés and local shops. Choose a place that suits your appetite and allowance; there is no need to make a full restaurant itinerary for a short call.
Check menu prices, service charges and the currency before ordering. Leave time for the meal and the journey back, and browse without treating every shop stop as a purchase.
Cruise-port planning
Start with your pier, finish with time to spare
- Confirm the docking location. The City lists Mallory Square Dock, Pier B and the Navy Mole. Your ship’s instructions determine your actual arrival point; do not assume every call starts with the same walk.
- Ask about shuttle arrangements. Some passengers use transport between the berth and town. If assigned the Navy/Outer Mole, confirm the permitted access and any shuttle pickup and last-return instructions with the cruise line before leaving the ship.
- Keep the walk realistic. Heat, breaks, queues and mobility needs affect how much town you can cover. Check the return route rather than measuring the day only in straight-line distance.
- Check transport separately. Use current Transit routes and fares if you want a bus option; do not assume a sightseeing trolley, public bus and cruise shuttle share a ticket or pickup point.
- Follow ship time. Confirm all-aboard time and allow for any shuttle, walk or activity delay on the way back.
