Start with the ocean, the river or the boulevard

You can spend time in Fort Lauderdale without building the day around admissions. Choose a public waterfront walk or a little browsing, then keep parking, meals and organized activities as separate budget decisions.

Riverwalk & the New River

Enjoy the public paths and waterside setting downtown. Pause to watch the boats, look around the open waterfront areas and choose a manageable section to walk. Follow current signs around construction and private docks.

A downtown day beside the water

Pair a Riverwalk stroll with nearby Las Olas browsing, or check whether the Water Trolley serves the stops you need. Let the riverfront be the outing, with a meal or museum as an optional addition.

Downtown and the beach are distinct areas. Plan a connection if you want both; the free river service is a New River route, not a boat to every beach or canal.

Free / low-cost transportation

Check the route before relying on a free ride

Riverwalk Water Trolley

The City’s LauderGO! Water Trolley is free along the New River. The published normal operating window is daily, 10 AM–10 PM. Board only at designated, operating stops and check the live service notices before traveling.

Bridge openings can cause delays. The City currently says the vessel is not wheelchair accessible; confirm suitable alternatives and boarding arrangements with LauderGO! if needed.

LauderGO! Community Shuttle

The City lists free community shuttle routes as part of LauderGO! Check the current route map, stop, direction and timetable for the trip you actually want. A free service is useful only when its route and hours fit your plans.

LauderGO! also lists the Micro Mover in downtown and beach service areas. Check coverage and booking instructions directly; do not assume an on-demand vehicle can take you anywhere in the city.

Water Trolley versus Water Taxi

The free Water Trolley and the paid Water Taxi have different routes and tickets, even though Water Taxi operates the City’s river service. Check the service name before boarding or buying a pass.

For a paid canal or sightseeing outing, compare current boarding points, inclusions, last departures and weather terms.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Choose the promenade for an oceanfront walk or use a designated public access point for the sand. Bring what you need for a simple visit and budget separately for parking, rentals and refreshments.

Check current beach conditions, flags and posted instructions before entering the water. Weather, currents and surf can change your plans; the photograph is not a condition or swimming-safety report.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park · A low-cost outdoor alternative

The park sits between the ocean and Intracoastal Waterway, offering an alternative to the beachfront streets. Park admission applies: the official fee page currently lists $6 per vehicle for up to eight people, $4 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle, and $2 for pedestrians or bicyclists. Confirm current fees before visiting.

Check the park’s live alerts before planning facilities or boat access. At this review, the floating dock is closed, and some pavilions and restrooms are under construction. Do not assume every facility or activity is available.

Las Olas · Shopping, galleries & dining

Browse first, decide where to stop

Las Olas offers a walkable pocket of shops, galleries and restaurants. Pick the commercial stretch you want to explore, take time to look around and let a menu or exhibition determine whether you stay longer.

Public-street browsing is free to explore. Individual galleries and businesses set their own opening and visitor arrangements; a restaurant, purchase or museum visit adds to the day’s cost.

Keep food plans flexible: compare menus near the part of town you are already enjoying. Check service charges and opening details, and leave enough time for the return journey if you arrived by shuttle or boat.

Before you go

Choose a walkable area, then plan the connections

  • Separate downtown from the beachfront. Riverwalk and the Las Olas shopping area pair naturally, but reaching the ocean adds a journey. Choose your connection rather than assuming every stop is on one short stroll.
  • Check the actual parking location. Rates, time limits and event arrangements vary. Read current signs and payment instructions; no universal free-parking claim or fixed tariff applies here.
  • Confirm the return ride. Check operating hours, service notices and the last useful departure before relying on a shuttle or boat. Allow time for bridge operations and event traffic.
  • Keep an alternative for weather or closures. Match beach and water activities to conditions, and check park alerts and museum availability before setting out.
